To provide an image recording apparatus which can record a good image on the whole surface by preventing the occurrence of the unevenness of an image at a front end and a rear end, without causing a decrease in throughput.
This recording apparatus comprises: a roller for carrying a recording sheet and a carriage equipped with a recording head; a platen which is equipped with an absorber for absorbing ink protruding from the recording sheet; and an auxiliary guide (front-end auxiliary guide) which is provided on the upstream side with respect to the recording head in the carrying direction (sub-scanning direction) of a material subject to recording. The platen is provided with an auxiliary guide (rear-end auxiliary guide) which is positioned on the downstream side with respect to the recording head in the carrying direction (sub-scanning direction) of the material subject to recording. The front-end auxiliary guide and the rear-end auxiliary guide have a latch mechanism which can independently move in the sub-scanning direction, and which enables the front-end auxiliary guide and the rear-end auxiliary guide to be connected to/disconnected from each other. When moving to the downstream side, the front-end auxiliary guide is connected to the rear-end auxiliary guide. When returning to a prescribed position on the upstream side, the front-end auxiliary guide is disconnected from the rear-end auxiliary guide.
