Abstract:

PURPOSE: To safely and economically isomerize a cis-alkenyl compound to trans-compound in a high isomerization ratio and selectivity by carrying out the isomerization reaction in the presence of a nitric acid catalyst

CONSTITUTION: Nitric acid is added to a cis-alkenyl compound (e.g. cis-4- tridecenyl chloride) and reacted at 60-150°C for 0.5-5hr. The nitric acid is used separately in an amount of 0.5-3wt.% in terms of 100% nitric acid based on the cis-alkenyl compound. The isomerization reaction may be carried out in a solvent such as toluene and xylene according to the case. The process provides a geometric isomer important as a constituent component for synthetic pheromone, synthetic perfumery, terpenes, etc.
