To accurately detect defective pixels by the adhesion of contaminant or missing dots.
The pixel data for a pixel train comprising a plurality of pixels being arranged in a first direction is acquired from the image data of an image including a line in the first direction while being the image data of the image which is constituted of a plurality of pixels being arranged into a matrix form in the first direction and a second direction. A representative value indicating the gradation value of each pixel train is respectively calculated based on the pixel data of each pixel train, and the position of the second direction of the line in the image is calculated based on the representative value of each pixel train by this line position calculating method. When the representative value of each pixel train is calculated, the pixel data for each pixel constituting the pixel train is compensated based on the pixel data of the plurality of pixels which constitute the pixel train. Then, defective pixels are detected from the plurality of pixels which constitute the pixel train based on the pixel data after the compensation of the pixel train.
