Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to improve characteristics, such as reflectivity and color purity, to enhance a contrast and to set a driving voltage low by incorporating a plurality of compds. having asymmetric carbon into the liquid crystal compsn. and adopting a specific compd. for one among these compds.
SOLUTION: The chiral nematic liquid crystal compsn. exhibiting a cholesteric phase at room temp. contains a plurality of the compds. hating the asymmetric carbon and the one thereof is formed of the compd. expressed by the formula. The nematic liquid crystals are preferably a liquid crystalline trans compd., liquid crystalline pyrimidine compd. or liquid crystalline cyanobiphenyl compd., etc., and are preferably the compds. essentially consisting of liquid crystal compds. having positive dielectric anisotropy. The compsn. exhibiting the cholesteric phase at room temp. is obtd. by adding a proper amt. of plurality of the compds. having the asymmetric carbon as a chiral material to the compsn. In addition, the adjustment of a selective reflection wavelength by various amts. in the amt. of the chiral material to be added is possible. The two compds. are thus added in combination as the chiral material at least.
