Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the difference in transmittance between when increasing and when decreasing voltage, namely, to decrease hysteresis, and to obtain high resistance and voltage holding rate by using a transparent solid material produced by polymn. of a polymerizable compsn. containing polymerizable monomers having optically active groups.
SOLUTION: This device consists of two substrates having electrode layers at least one of which is transparent and a light-controlling layer held between the substrates. The light-controlling layer contains a liquid crystal material and a transparent solid material. The transparent solid material is produced by polymn. of a polymerizable compsn. containing polymerizable monomers having optically active groups. In this method, the polymerizable monomers having optically active groups can be easily produced from cyclic alcohols, phenol or aromatic hydroxy compds. having a liquid crystal skeleton having optically active groups and at least two six-member rings as a part of the structure by making into (meth)acryl by a usual method.
