Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable a liquid crystal to be stably operated even by D.C. square wave voltage driving, by a method wherein tetracyanodiphenoxydimethane (or its derivative) is blended with a specified nematic liquid crystal compd. and the resulting mixture is used as the liquid crystal compsn. of the titled device.

CONSTITUTION: 0.01W5wt% at least one compd. (B) selected from 13,13,14,14,- tetracyanodiphenoxy-dimethane of formula I and its substituted compds. of formulas II, III, IV and V, is incorporated into a nematic liquid crystal compd. (A) in which the dipole moment direction of the molecule of 4-ethyl-(4-butylazoxybenzene) or p-methoxybenzylidene-p'-butylaniline is approximately perpendicular to the major axis of the molecule. Then this liquid crystal compsn. is enclosed between the base plates of transparent electrodes opposite to each other to form the desired liquid crystal display device.
