Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable an SHG element characterized by use of a lithium niobate single crystal having a low phase-matching temperature by producing the lithium niobate single crystal characterized by high qualities, e.g. reduced segregation of magnesium, absence of a light-scattering factor, a small angle tilt grain boundary, a crack, ununiform refraction, etc., due to addition thereof and <=1 deg.C difference between upper and lower phase-matching temperatures. CONSTITUTION:A method for production of a lithium niobate single crystal characterized by a specified composition of a fused liquid in production of the lithium niobate single crystal by the drawing-up method. The composition of the fused liquid is controlled to be Li-poor based on the congruent composition in advance so that one Li atom may be substituted with one Mg atom. This new production method can provide the objective lithium niobate single crystal characterized by a lower phase-matching temperature in generation of the second high-frequency than that in the case Li is no replaced with Mg.
