To provide a magnetic pole estimator for an electric motor, capable of properly estimating the rotation speed and magnetic pole position of a motor in estimating each phase current of the motor by a DC side current sensor.
A phase current estimating section 23 estimates a current value of each one point of a phase current at a timing symmetrical to a carrier peak in each of symmetrical voltage patterns of the carrier peak in one period of a carrier signal, calculates a current value of the phase current at a predetermined timing based on a current value of the timing of two points each consisting of one point, and synchronizes the predetermined timing of each of three-phase current. In estimating a phase difference Δθe of γδ coordinate system for a dq coordinate system by utilizing the fact that an induction voltage generated by the motor 11 is changed by the rotation speed, a magnetic pole position error estimating section 46 calculates the phase difference Δθe by a voltage equation at the predetermined timing synchronized by the phase current estimating section 23. A rotation speed-magnetic pole position operating section 47 operates magnetic pole position estimation value θe from the phase difference Δθe.
