Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a conflict between entries in a protection area and to automatically adjust the size of the protection area to a proper value by comparing the latest access times of both entries at the LRU positions in the protection area and an examination area with each other in case of a cache miss.
SOLUTION: The time when each entry 3 is accessed most recently is stored and held. In case of a cache miss, the access times of both the LRU entries 3 held in the protection area 1 and examination area 2 are compared with each other. When the former is older, the LRU entry 3 in the protection area 1 is moved to an MRU position in the examination area 2 to reduce the size of the protection area 1, the entry 3 having caused the cache miss is added at the MRU position in the examination area 3, and the LRU entry 3 in the examination area 2 is expelled. When the latter is older, the LRU entry 3 in the examination area 2 is expelled and the entry 3 having caused the cache miss is added at the MRU position in the examination area 2 instead.
