To prepare a microorganism capable of producing carotenoid in an industrial scale and provide a carotenoid produced by using a new carotenoid-producing strain.
A carotenoid is prepared by using a cell transformed with a DNA sequence encoding a polypeptide having a specific enzymatic activity of (a) to (f) and derived from Paracoccus sp. MBIC1143 strain or a DNA sequence essentially homologous to the above DNA sequence or a cell transformed by a vector having the above DNA sequence; (a) enzymatic activity to convert the 4-methylene group of a β-ionone ring to keto group, (b) enzymatic activity to add one hydroxyl group to the 3 carbon of 4-keto-βionone ring or to the 3 carbon of β-ionone ring, (c) enzymatic activity to convert lycopene to β-carotene, (d) enzymatic activity to convert phytoene to lycopene, (e) prephytoene synthetase activity and (f) geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase activity.
