Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a relatively low-cost sheet material of a magnesium and manganese-containing aluminum alloy for high elongation forming of an article having a complicated shape.
SOLUTION: An alloy is continuously cast with an as-cast gage of 6 to 30 mm, is immediately hot-rolled at a final strip outlet temperature of 200 to 350°C and at a net rolling gage reduction of 30 to 80%, and is then coiled. The hot-rolled coil is annealed at 470 to 560°C to homogenize its microstructure. After cooling to an ambient temperature, the coil is cold-rolled to a desired sheet thickness, and has a net gage reduction of 50 to 90%. The cold-worked fine structure is suitably recrystallized, and thereafter the sheet is prepared for hot high elongation forming.
