Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for generating a dot image in an optimum dot size for an object picture when a binary printer with a low resolu tion provides an output of a continuous tone image.
CONSTITUTION: The rate of change in picture elements of an image part is measured by an edge detection means 2 employing a Sobel operator with respect to a picture element read from an image storage means 1. The rates of change in picture elements are classified into 'high', 'medium' and 'low' according to levels of an output of the edge detection means 2. On the other hand, three kinds of dot generating means 3-5 of 'fine', 'normal' and 'rough', for example, are operated simultaneously with respect to the image to generate three sizes of dot images. The output of the means 3-5 is given to an output changeover means 6, which provides an output of 'fine', 'normal' and 'rough' according to the 'high', 'medium', and 'low'.
