To display a fine subject to be tested by a highly accurate two-dimensional or three-dimensional image by using the simple circuitry constitution.
The image data of plural subjects to be tested having different focal positions are fetched by a video camera 2, converted into digital data by an A/D converter part 3 and stored in a frame memory 4. A region dividing circuit 7 provided in an image processing part 5 fetches the image data stored in the frame memory 4, divides them into regions having the prescribed number of pixels by means of the region dividing circuit 7, optimum focal positions in the respective regions are calculated by a spacial filtering detection method, a histogram deciding method and a frequency characteristic analyzing method by means of a focal position arithmetic circuit 8, image data judged as located at the optimum focal position are synthesized over a whole screen by an image composite circuit 9 and displayed in a display part 6.
