To provide a method for driving a liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal with bend orientation, making the liquid crystal change to the bend orientation within a short time.
In order to make a liquid crystal layer change over from an initial homogeneous state to a bend orientation state with high speed, a transitional motion period is arranged before an image display period. The first period to apply the first voltage potential difference between a pixel electrode and a counter electrode and the second period to apply the second voltage potential difference smaller than the first voltage potential difference are respectively and alternately repeated once or more. In this case, by using lowering of the pixel electrode potential in consequence of fluctuation of the gate line potential, a large voltage potential difference suitable for making the liquid crystal layer change to the bend orientation within a short time is applied between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode.
