To prevent shelf suspension of a cold iron source in the preheating chamber when it is melted using an arc melting facility having a shaft type preheating chamber coupled directly to the upper section of the melting chamber.
In such a method for melting a cold iron source 16 using an arc melting facility 1 comprising a melting chamber 2 and a shaft type preheating chamber 4 coupled directly to the upper section of the melting chamber, the cold iron source is fed continuously or intermittently into the preheating chamber to keep such a state as the cold iron source exists continuously in the melting chamber and the preheating chamber. The cold iron source in the melting chamber is melted by arc 19 while moving the cold iron source in the preheating chamber forcibly by operating a driver 11 disposed in the preheating chamber along the side wall thereof continuously or intermittently. When a specified quantity of melt 17 is stored in the melting chamber, the melt is delivered under a state where the cold iron source exists continuously in the melting chamber and the preheating chamber.
