To provide a novel method for obtaining an oxygen-containing compound, e.g., dimethyl ether, by oxidizing a hydrocarbon, e.g., methane, in a vapor phase under simple and relatively mild conditions.SOLUTION: A method for oxidizing a hydrocarbon into an oxygen-containing compound, comprises a step in which the hydrocarbon is brought into contact with a mixture gas comprising NO gas, NO2 gas, and O2 gas, in the presence of a catalyst. Preferably, the contact step is performed under the conditions where NO gas or NO2 gas is not reduced into N2.SELECTED DRAWING: None
