Abstract:

To produce 1,3-propanediol scarcely containing an impurity in a high selectivity and a high conversion when obtaining the 1,3-propanediol derivative by carrying out hydrolysis and/or reduction of malonaldehyde acetal.

The method for producing the polyhydric alcohol comprises carrying out hydrolysis and/or reduction of the malonaldehyde acetal in such a range that the amount of a compound having a formyl group in a system in the reaction does not exceed 30% based on the initial raw material amount.
