To provide a method for oxidizing an aromatic compound having at least one alkyl substituent, comprising oxidizing the aromatic compound in the presence of a catalyst which does not use corrosive bromide ion, is stable without being decomposed even in an oxidizing atmosphere, and can be recycled as a catalyst.
This method for oxidizing an aromatic compound having at least one alkyl substituent comprises oxidizing the aromatic compound in the presence of a catalyst containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of the periods 4 to 6 elements of the groups IB, VA, VIIA, and VIII in the periodic table, and a heteropolyoxometalate anion which contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of phosphorus, silicon and germanium as the heteroatom, contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium and niobium as the polyatom, and has two defective structure sites.
