To provide an embossing roll for producing an optical film using a method of ceramic thermal spraying.

By using a metallic roll core material made of iron, aluminum or the like, its surface is subjected to stone polishing, thereafter, the surface of the roll core material is subjected to plasma spraying with ceramic, so that a ceramic layer is formed on the surface of the roll core material. Next, the surface of the ceramic layer is subjected to stone polishing, and its surface is arranged to such an extent that a surface roughness Ra is about 0.005 to 0.01 m. Further, fine ruggedness is formed on the surface of the ceramic layer by sand blasting or laser machining, so as to produce an embossing roll. According to this invention, the method for continuously and stably producing an antireflection film or the like without generating defects by using an embossing roll having uniform and fine ruggedness can be provided.
