Abstract:
To provide a method by which dimethylolbutanoic acid is obtained with a high selectivity using trimethylolpropane(TMP) as a raw material.
The TMP is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst and the resultant cyclic formal is oxidized in the presence of an acid catalyst consisting essentially of nitric acid. The obtained cyclic carboxylic acid is then decomposed in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
