To provide a method for producing α-methylstyrene by which a high conversion ratio can efficiently be obtained at a low cost.
The method for producing the α-methylstyrene comprises dehydrating cumyl alcohol in the presence of activated alumina. The method for production is a part of a method for producing propylene oxide by which the reaction is carried out in the liquid phase while feeding an inert gas to a reaction system and the method comprises the following steps. An oxidizing step of oxidizing cumene and thereby providing cumene hydroperoxide, an epoxidizing step of reacting a cumene solution containing the cumene hydroperoxide with an excessive amount of propylene in the presence of a solid catalyst in the liquid phase and thereby affording propylene oxide and cumyl alcohol, a dehydrating step of dehydrating cumyl alcohol obtained in the epoxidizing step in the presence of a solid catalyst and thereby providing α-methylstyrene and a hydrogenating step of hydrogenating the α-methylstyrene in the presence of a solid catalyst and affording cumene and recycling the resultant cumene to the oxidizing step.
