To provide a method for producing an N-hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid, capable of obtaining a high-purity N-hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid by a simple operation without passing through a complicated purification process and yet readily reusing a solvent.
This method for producing the N-hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid comprises reacting an amino acid salt whose aqueous solution shows basicity with a dicarbonate compound in a mixed solution of a water-soluble organic solvent and water to give a reaction solution containing the salt of the N- hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid as the objective substance, an alcohol and an N-hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid ester as reaction by-products, removing the alcohol and the water-soluble organic solvent from the reaction solution, then extracting and removing the N-hydrocarbon oxycarbonylamino acid ester by using a water-insoluble organic solvent from the aqueous solution from which the alcohol and the water-soluble organic solvent are removed and bringing the aqueous solution containing the salt of the objective substance into contact with an acid.
