To provide a method for stably producing a precursor fiber of a carbon fiber with little fluff winding in a baking step because the grade is good.
The method for producing the precursor fiber of the carbon fiber includes a spinning step of a polyacrylonitrile-based polymer solution, a step of washing the resultant fiber yarn A with water, a step of drawing the fiber yarn in a water bath, a step of carrying out dry heat-treatment, and a step of steam drawing the fiber yarn with a steam drawing apparatus equipped with a drawing tube B having sealing members on both end sides. In the method, the polyacrylonitrile-based polymer has a wight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 200,000-500,000 measured by a GPC (gel permeation chromatograph) method and polydispersity (Mz/Mw) (wherein, Mz represents a Z-average molecular weight) of 2.5-6.0. In the steam drawing step, the drawing tube has two divided regions of a pre-heating region C on the introduction side of the fiber yarn, and a heating region D on the takeout side of the fiber yarn.
