To provide a technically simple method effectively, selectively and economically producing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP) in high space-time yield (based on γ-butyrolactone) (γ-BL) from ammonia, methanol and γ-BL.
This method produces NMP in two steps, reacting ammonia with methanol in the presence of a catalyst at a high temperature to produce a mixture including monomethylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine and ammonia, separating ammonia in a first step and then reacting the mixture including methylamine with γ-BL in a molar ratio of monomethylamine/γ-BL ≥1 at a high temperature and an overpressure, separating NMP and unreacted methylamine from the reaction product and returning the unreacted methylamine to the first step to react with methanol and ammonia.
