To provide a method for industrially purifying optically active 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethanol.
Provided is the method for industrially purifying the optically active 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethanol, characterized by recrystallizing the optically active 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethanol in an aliphatic hydrocarbon-based solvent, whereby the dramatic improvement of the optical purity of the 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethanol has been found. Especially when n-heptane among the aliphatic hydrocarbon-based solvents is used, the efficiency of the recrystallization can remarkably be improved. When the aliphatic hydrocarbon-based solvent is used in an amount of 2 to 10 mL per gram of the optically active 1-(2-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethanol, the purification can be carried out in a large scale in a good recovering rate. Additionally, the load of a cooling installation can largely be reduced by the adoption of a maturing temperature of -20 to +10C.
