METHOD FOR REGULATING SIZE OF RUBBER-LIKE COMPOSITE PARTICLE DISPERSED IN CONTINUOUS RESIN PHASE

Abstract:

PURPOSE: To reduce the volume-mean diameter of rubber-like composite particles dispersed in a continuous resin phase and to thereby obtain a well-balanced impact-resistant modified thermoplastic material by subjecting a syrup of the rubber-like composite particles to uniform shearing.
CONSTITUTION: 1-20 wt.% rubber-like composite particles having a volume-mean particle diameter of about 6-15 μm are dispersed in a continuous resin phase (e.g. styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer). Next, this syrup is subjected to a field of a relatively uniform controlled shear to reduce the volume-mean particle diameter of the rubber-like composite particles in the syrup by 20% or above, desirably, to about 0.05-5 μm. Here, the rubber-like composite particles are suitably made of a polybutadiene. The field of controlled shear is suitably realized by a process comprising feeding the syrup into a chamber provided with a cylinder and relatively rotating the chamber and the cylinder.
