PURPOSE: To produce a metallic block having high cleanliness at a low cost by melting and solidifying the metallic block under a specific condition, accumu lating inclusions near the surface thereof and removing the surface layer.
CONSTITUTION: The metallic block is melted in a mold having a range defined with the inequality H<0.6×ρ (wherein, H is depth of the mold (cm) and ρis sp.gr. of the metallic block (g/cm3)) and, after holding for a holding time in the range of (T)(sec) defined with the inequality T>170×H/ρ, this metallic block is solidified and formed. The inclusions contained in the metallic block produced in such a way are accumulated near the metallic block surface, and further, the surface layer is removed by etching. The removal by etching is executed by 30μm thickness with e.g. hydrochloric acid or aqua regia. By this method, the metallic block of high cleanliness without containing inclusions such as oxide, nitride, sulfide can be produced.
