Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject copolymer excellent in adhesivity, printability, hydrophilicity, flame retardance, etc., by copolymerizing an α-olefin with a specific compound, modifying the resultant olefinic copolymer and introducing a functional group into an unsaturated bond.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-12C α-olefin (e.g. ethylene or propylene) is initially copolymerized with an unsaturated group-containing aromatic compound of the formula [R1 is 1-20C hydrocarbon; R2 is halogen or 1-8C hydrocarbon; R3 and R4 are H, 1-8C hydrocarbon, etc.; (m) is 0-4] [e.g. p-(2-propenyl)styrene] in the presence of a catalyst to provide an olefinic copolymer having 10-6 to 90mol% content of unit derived from the compound of the formula and 0.01-30dl/g reduced viscosity in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 0.05g/dl concentration at 135°C. The resultant copolymer is then modified to introduce a functional group such as hydroxyl group by the chemical reaction to afford the objective copolymer.
