To reduce switche-over shock upon switching from a synchronous operation mode to a position sensorless mode.
A control apparatus 6a includes a dq vector control unit which controls a permanent magnet synchronous motor via an inverter so as to match the rotational speed of the motor to a speed instruction value i. The control apparatus has a synchronous operation mode, in which the permanent magnet synchronous motor is synchronized to a rotation angle m^ given by integrating the speed instruction value to drive the motor, and a position sensorless mode in which the rotation angle m of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is put under feedback control, and also includes a switching unit 19 which in the synchronous operation mode, estimates an axis error c between the rotor axis of the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the control system axis of the dq vector control unit 60 to approximately match the estimated axis error to the phase difference of a current instruction value, and then performs switching to the position sensorless mode.
