PURPOSE: To detect and display holding of paper sheets in a cassette automatically, make confirmatory work by an operator unnecessary and eliminate miscopies when paper sheets are manually fed in the condition set in the cassette.

CONSTITUTION: When paper sheets are manually fed in the condition set in the cassette, a judgement of holding the paper sheets in the cassette is made by detecting that the paper sheets are set by means of a manual feeding size sensor 800 in the vicinity of a feed roller in the condition before the paper sheets are set, and that the paper sheets are not set by means of a manual feeding end sensor 801 of a manual feeding table. When incorrect holding of the paper sheets is detected, the copying action is prohibited, and miscopying is avoided beforehand by displaying the holding condition.
