Abstract:

PURPOSE: To decrease the usual ringing action at the edge periphery in the transformed coding technique by using a more efficient DPCM method that eliminates the correlation of the picture element value of a block.
CONSTITUTION: An input frame is divided into the blocks of smaller picture element data and edge-detected 1. By the edge detection, the activity of the block itself and the peripheral block is investigated, and it is decided whether or not the block can be classified as an edge block. When the block is classified as the non-edge block, the conventional DCT coding method accompanied by or not accompanied by an action compensation is applied. On the other hand, when the block is classified as the edge block, the block is loaded to a picture element value presumed process to suitably refer to the frame coded previously, and loaded to quantizing processes 9, 10, 15 and 16 and a run-length coding process 13 by a variable length code.
