Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the viscosity of a magnetic coating material and to improve the workability by using a binder comprising a polyurethane resin having specified quaternary ammonium carboxylate groups or quaternary ammonium sulfonate groups in the side chains of the molecule and hydroxyl groups on the molecular ends.
SOLUTION: This binder for a magnetic recording medium contains quaternary ammonium carboxylate group a-1 expressed by formula I and/or quaternary ammonium sulfonate groups a-2 expressed by formula II in the side chains of the molecule. Moreover, the binder for a magnetic recording medium consists of a polyurethane (A) having hydroxyl groups on the molecular ends. The binder consists of a polyurethane (A) prepared by allowing methyl triethylammonium monomethylcarbonate (B) to react with a polyurethane resin having carboxyl groups and/or sulfonate groups on the side chains of the molecule and hydroxyl groups on the molecular ends.
