To obtain the subject new antibiotic having herbicidal activity of wide spectrum against various weeds, exhibiting antifungal activity against filamentous fungi which are pathogens of plants and useful as a herbicide and a germicide for agriculture and horticulture by culturing resormycin-producing fungus belonging to the genus Streptomyces.
This new antibiotic, resormycin, is represented by the formula and the antibiotic has strong herbicidal activity of a wide spectrum against various weeds and exhibits excellent antifungal activity against plant phathogenic filamentous fungi and is useful as a herbicide and a germicide for agriculture and horticulture. This producing strain of resormycis belongs to the genus Streptomyces and is obtained by inoculating a resormycine- producing fungus [e.g. Streptomyces MJ953-SF5 strain (FERM P-15335), etc.] into a culture medium, culturing the fungus, centrifuging the cultured product to precipitate the fungicidal cells, adjusting pH of the supernatant to 7.0 and passing the supernatant though active carbon for chromatograph, eluting absorbed material with 50% acetone solution and fractionating the eluate with gel filtration chromatography, etc.
