To obtain a new saponin having suppressing actions on sugar absorption and alcohol absorption and useful for prevention of obesity and prevention and treatment, etc., of diabetes mellitus as a suppressor of absorption of carbohydrate, being separated from an extract which is extracted from Kochia scoperia (L.) Schrader.

This new saponin comprises 3-O-[{β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→3)}-β-D- glucuronopyranosyl]-2,2-β-hydroxyoleanolic acid and has suppressing actions on sugar absorption and alcohol absorption and is useful for prevention, etc., of various undesirable effects due to excess ingestion of carbohydrate, e.g. prevention of obesity, prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus, prevention, etc., of hangeover as an active ingredient, etc., of suppressor for absorption of carbohydrate. The compound is obtained by extracting Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrader of the family Chenopodiaceae (Lifu) with metanol under heating, distributing the extract with ethyl acetate and water, extracting a part transferred to water with 1-butanol and fractionating the extract by high-performance liquid chromatography.
