PURPOSE: To provide a new itaconic acid derivative having hypoglycemic activity, thus useful as an antidiabetic agent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective itaconic acid derivative (or its salt) of formula I [R is H or 1-6C alkyl; A is heterocycle, 3 to 8-membered cycloalkyl or phenyl (may be substituted with halogen, alkyl, or alkoxy); B is condensed bicyclic amino which may have one to two unsaturated bond(s) in the rings], formula II, formula III (R1 is halogen, 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkoxy; n is 1-3), formula IV (Z is ethylene or vinylene), formula V, formula VI (X is halogen), formula VII, or formula VIII; e.g. (E)-2-(4-methylbenzylidene)-3-(cis-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-2- isoindolinylboninyl)propionic acid. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction between an itaconic anhydride of formula IX and a compound of B-H followed by, as necessary, esterification.
