PURPOSE: To obtain a new pyrimidine derivative useful as a herbicide, a plant growth regulator or an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, having herbicidal action and regulating action on plant growth.
CONSTITUTION: The pyrimidine derivative of formula I [R1 is a 1-6C haloalkyl, a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-6C cycloalkyl, a 3-6C halocycloalkyl, etc.; R2 is H, a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-6C cycloalkyl, a 3-6C cycloalkyl (1-4C) alkyl, etc.; X is carbonyl, C(R3)OH (R3 is H, a 1-6C alkyl, a 3-8C alkenyl, etc.), etc.] such as 1-chloro-1,l- difluoro-3-ethoxymethylene-2,4-pentanedione, etc. For example, a compound in which X is C=0 in the compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a 2,4-dicarbonyl compound of formula II with an orthoformic ester derivative to give a 3-alkoxymethylene-2,4-dicarbonyl derivative of formula III and reacting the compound with a formamidine.
