To obtain the subject new compound consisting of a specific thiamacrolide, which is obtained by saponification and cyclization of an iodofatty acid ester after it is reacted with tetramethylurea and then with monoalcoholate, and useful, e.g. as a functional perfume.
This thiamacrolide is shown by formula I (R is H; (m) is 9 and (n) is 3, (m) is 7 and (n) is 4, (m) is 3 and (n) is 8, or (m) is 7 and (n) is 3), e.g. 6-thia-16-hezadecnolide, useful as a functional perfume or the like, e.g. moschus odorant and fine perfume which have extremely low threshold limit values. The compound is obtained by (1) converting an iodofatty acid ester shown by formula II (R' is a 1-6C alkyl or an aryl) into a tetramethylthiouronium salt shown by formula III (Me is methyl) by reacting it with tetramethylurea, (2) saponifying the above salt into a compound shown, by formula IV, after it is reacted with a monoalcoholate at high temperature, and (3) cyclizing the product by a known method.
