Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-woven fabric which has an excellent liquid-holding ability over a long period, a large liquid-absorbing speed and an excellent mechanical strength, and to provide a battery using the same.
SOLUTION: This non-woven fabric comprising high strength fibers having a tensile strength of ≥6 cN/dtex and ultra fine fibers having a fiber diameter of ≤4 μm is characterized in that the fibers in an amount of >70 mass % in the non-woven fabric has a polyethylene-based resin on their fiber surfaces and that oxygen-containing functional groups exist in a larger amount in the non-woven fabric than that on the surfaces of the non-woven fabric. The high strength fibers of the non-woven fabric preferably have the polyethylene-based resin on the fiber surfaces. The ultra fine fibers of the non-woven fabric preferably comprise island components obtained by removing sea components from sea-island type fibers. The non-woven fabric can suitably be used as separators for batteries or as separators for electric double layer capacitors. The battery uses the non-woven fabric as the separator.
