Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide the subject novel synthetic intermediate useful for the direct synthesis of vitamin A or carotenoids at a high yield and at a high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided a novel intermediate of formula I (wherein A is H unit, or a 1-4C alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxy unit), e.g. 1,1,5-trimethyl-4- cyclohexene-9-methylhexene-6,9,10-triene methyl ketone. The compound of formula I is obtained by heat treatment of an acetylenic derivative of formula II (wherein R is 2-15C alkenyl, 2-15C alkylcarbonyl, alkoxyalkyl or the like) or by condensation of ethynyl-retro-α-ionol with 2-alkoxypropene in the presence of an acid. The intermediate of formula II is obtained by reacting a product, obtained by contacting β-ionone with an alkoxide, with acetylene in the presence of a base when R is H, and by reacting ethynyl-retro-α-ionol with a 3-10C enol- ether or the like when R is other than H.
