To provide an ocular optical system which offers sufficient correction for various aberrations while maintaining a wide angle of view.SOLUTION: An ocular optical system provided herein comprises a first lens having negative refractive power and a second lens having a positive refractive power arranged in order from the display element side to the viewer side, where an optical axial distance TTL from a display element to a viewer-side lens surface of the second lens at a standard diopter of the ocular optical system, an optical axial distance D from a display element-side lens surface of the first lens to a viewer-side lens surface of the second lens, an average refractive index Nda of a material of the first lens and a material of the second lens, a focal length f1 of the first lens, a focal length f2 of the second lens, and a focal length f of the entire ocular optical system are each set appropriately.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
