To provide an optical device which is capable of observing the total range of a sample with the same objective lens by scanning a stage on which the sample is mounted in the two-dimensional direction, recording multiple scan images, joining together a plurality of the scan images and reproducing one image without the sense of incongruity, particularly when performing the fluorescent observation of the sample larger than the visual field of the objective lens.
The optical device is provided with an excitation light irradiation means which applies excitation light to a sample 3 retained on a carrier 2, a dark visual field irradiation means which applies light of wavelengths having the same extent with fluorescence emitted by the sample 3 according to the irradiation of excitation light to a known indication P written on the carrier 2, an imaging means which divides the carrier 2 into a plurality of regions so that the regions adjacent to one another are partially superimposed, images the fluorescence on each region and images the light which strikes the known indication P and is scattered and an image processing section which connects the respective pictures imaged on the plurality of regions so as to allow the same known indications P taken on the superimposed part to coincide.
