To reliably detect an absolute position in optical equipment which detects the absolute position by accumulating pulse signals generated every time an optical system moves by predetermined moving amount.
The absolute position is detected by counting pulses generated with the movement of a focusing lens. A counted value is stored in a storage means when a power source is turned off. A pulse counter is initialized according to the counted value read out from the storage means when the power source is turned on. When an area where the focusing lens is positioned at present is detected by a brush and the counted value read out from the storage means is different from the counted value in the detected area, the counted value is reset based on the area detected by the brush.
