This optical frequency shifter removes unnecessary light and amplifies necessary light by making good use of an injection synchronization phenomenon obtained by making light of specific fundamental light frequency incident on an electrooptic modulator 21 applied with a modulating signal generated by an RF generating device 22 and imposing modulation, making output light containing various frequency components such as sidebands incident on a semiconductor laser 23, and also controlling the driving current from a constant-current source 24 so that the free-running frequency of the semiconductor laser 23 of only a selected sideband enters an injection synchronizable range.
