Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:An optically active alcohol expressed by formula I (X is halogen).
EXAMPLE: (R)-1-(2-Bromophenyl)ethanol.
USE: An intermediate raw material or precursor of optically active compounds, having negative temperature characteristics and extremely high twisting ability and useful as a composition of liquid crystal materials used as liquid crystal display elements.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula II is reduced to provide a racemic alcohol expressed by formula III, which is then passed through biochemical asymmetric ester interchange or synthesis and optically resolved to afford the aimed optically active alcohol expressed by formula I.
