Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new compound consisting of a specific 3,3- dialkylacrylic acid, having a low crystallization temperature and a wide temperature range to give a smectic C phase, giving a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition stable over a long period and useful for a liquid crystal display element, etc.
SOLUTION: This optically inactive low-molecular liquid crystal compound has a structure expressed by the formula I (R is methyl, ethyl or propyl; (m) is an integer of 1-20; (n) is an integer of 3-19; A is group of the formula II or the formula III; X is single bond or O). The compound is useful in an optoelectronic field as a liquid crystal material for a liquid crystal display element, etc., to give a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a low crystallization temperature and a wide temperature range to exhibit smectic C phase and capable of stably keeping a compatibilized state over a long period. The compound can be produced by reacting a 3,3-dialkylacrylic acid with a hydroxyphenylpyrimidine derivative of the formula IV, etc., in DMF in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, etc.
