To provide an organic EL element having high sealing performance.

The organic EL element 10 includes a glass substrate 17, and an organic EL layer 14 provided on the glass substrate 17 and having an anode 11, a cathode 13, and an organic light emitting layer 12 provided between the anode 11 and the cathode 13. The organic EL layer 14 is sealed by a cap base material 20 provided on the glass substrate 17. The cap base material 20 consists of a top plate 23 and a peripheral edge frame body 22. The cap base material 20 has a cavity 21 for storing the organic EL layer 14. Adhesive 30 exists between the peripheral edge frame body 22 of the cap base material 20 and the glass substrate 17, and an abutting face 22a of the peripheral edge frame body 22 of the cap base material 20 on the glass base material 17 has a storage groove 22b extending throughout the periphery of the peripheral edge frame body 22. The adhesive 30 existing between the peripheral edge frame body 22 and the glass substrate 17 is also stored in the storage groove 22b.
