Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound having a low mol.wt., a narrow mol.wt. distribution, and Si-bonded hydrogen atoms in the siloxy groups at the molecular bridge ends by reacting the hydrolytic condensation reaction product with a disilazane. CONSTITUTION:An organotrihalosilane of a formula: R<1>SiX3 [R<1> is (substituted) monovalent hydrocarbon; X is halogen] is hydrolyzed and condensed in a two- layered system consisting of an aqueous layer containing a lower aliphatic alcohol and an alkali metal carboxylate salt and an aprotic organic solvent layer. The obtained product is reacted with a disilazane of the formula: (R<2>R<3>R<4> Si)2NH [R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are H, (substituted) monovalent hydrocarbon, and at least one of the R<2>, R<3> and R<4> is H or aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon] to produce an organopolysilsesquioxane of the formula >=80% of whose components have number-average mol.wts. of 1000-9000 converted into the standard polystyrene by a gel permeation chromatography.
