PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal orienting agent showing a short erasing time of afterimages when voltage is applied on a liquid crystal cell by incorporating a polymer obtd. by allowing a specified tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride to react with a diamine compd.
CONSTITUTION: This agent contains a polymer and/or its imidized polymer obtd. by allowing a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride expressed by formula I to react with a diamine compd. expressed by formula II. In formulae I and II, R1 is a quadrivalent org. group and R2 is a bivalent org. group containing a cyano group or nitro group. As for the teracarboxylic acid dianhydride, butane tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, 1,2,3,4-cyclobutane tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, etc., are used. As for diamine compd, for example, 2,3-diamino- benzonitrile, 2,4-diaminobenzonitrile, and 2,5-diaminobenzonitrile are exemplified.
