To obtain a partially fluorinated alkyl compound and a lubricant which lasts excellent lubrication effect for many hours under various use conditions and is used for magnetic recording mediums having excellent running properties, abrasion resistance, durability, etc.
This partially fluorinated alkyl compound is represented by general formula 1 (R is a 6-30C saturated/unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Rf is a saturated/unsaturated fluoroalkyl group; X1 is a bifunctional hydrocarbon group which may be substituted with a hydroxy group/amino group, an aromatic ring group or a heterocyclic ring group, an aromatic ring group or a heterocyclic ring group substituted with a hydrocarbon group/ aromatic ring or a hydrocarbon group substituted with an aromatic ring; X2 and X3 are the same or different and each a hydrocarbon group or an aromatic ring group which may be substituted with hydrogen or a hydroxyl group/amino group) such as C18H37-CH(COO(CH2)3N(C2H5)2)CH2COORf.
