The photographic element has a photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer combined with a magenta dye forming coupler having an azole nucleus and a ballasted compd. of the formula, wherein each R1 is H, alkyl, aryl, acyl or acylamino, L is a bonding atom or group bonded to the phenyl ring through a hetero atom, each (a) is a substituent, at least one of the substituents (a) bonds to the phenyl ring through N, S, C or O and (q) is 1-5 but the groups L and (a) are selected so that the number of O bonding to the phenyl ring does not exceed 1.
